People in Tansen, the district headquarters of Palpa, have been hit hard by an acute shortage of water of late. Madhav Kandel of Silkhantole, Tansen, said they get water from taps after each five or seven days these days. “We were able to manage water when it was supplied every alternate day, but the problem has become too serious in the past one month,” he said.
As a result, locals have been compelled to buy water from private suppliers. However, the suppliers, too, have affected due to lack of sources of water in the area.
While everyone in the district headquarters have been affected, tenants in the area are having a tough time coping with the shortage of water. As landlords always prioritise themselves, the tennants have no option but to collect water from natural spouts, sometimes even at night. They are forced to queue up at Narayansthan, Teendhara and Holadangi.
Students living in rented rooms in the area have been compelled to attend colleges during the day and queue up for water at night. The students have been forced to skip classes to make sure they fill their buckets of water.
Locals said though hoped that the problem would be solved when the Drinking Water and Sanitation Division (DWSD) handed over the management of local drinking water project to the consumers’ committee three years ago, the problem just worsened.
The committee has been providing water on the basis of applications filed since 1994. The committee members said the increasing population and rapid installation of new taps are the main reasons behind the problem. Keshab Poudel, a member of the committee, meanwhile, said the shortage of water was caused mainly due to the drying up of sources of water in the area.
Meanwhile, locals have accused the committee of not doing anything worthwhile except installing pipelines at their own office and distributing water to only their near and dear ones. “The minimum tariff has increased from Rs 35 to Rs 300, but the supply of water has gone down by 85 percent,” Bam Bahadur Thapa, a local resident, said.
